The Curiosity Gap - When UX Designs Questions Instead of Answers

I opened LinkedIn.
A notification was waiting for me.
Someone viewed your profile.
For a second, I stopped scrolling.
Who was it?
A recruiter?
A client?
Someone from a company I'd applied to?
I tapped the notification.
Then I saw this.
🔒 Premium benefit.
At that moment, it stopped feeling like a notification.
It started feeling like a UX pattern.
As designers, we often think notifications exist to inform users.
But sometimes, they exist to create curiosity.
The notification tells you something happened, but deliberately withholds the part you actually care about.
Who viewed your profile?
When?
How many people?
The product already knows the answer.
It simply chooses not to show it.
That gap between something happened and here's what it means is called the Curiosity Gap.
Originally, it was a writing technique used in clickbait headlines.
Today, it's designed directly into digital products.
Why does it work?
Not because users need the feature.
Because it taps into predictable human behaviour.
The Zeigarnik Effect tells us that unfinished information stays active in our minds longer than completed information.
An open loop wants to be closed.
Then there's Loss Aversion.
The notification makes it feel like you're already missing something valuable.
Not seeing who viewed your profile feels like losing an opportunity rather than simply not having access to a premium feature.
And finally, Variable Reward.
Maybe it was one person.
Maybe it was ten.
Maybe it was a recruiter.
Maybe it wasn't.
The uncertainty itself keeps curiosity alive.
None of these patterns are inherently bad.
Understanding human psychology is part of good UX.
The question is how we use it.
Charging for premium features is completely legitimate.
Products need sustainable business models.
The problem begins when the product manufactures ambiguity just to sell the resolution.
Imagine the notification said:
3 people viewed your profile this week. Upgrade to see who.
The feature is still behind a paywall.
Nothing changes commercially.
But everything changes from a UX perspective.
The user understands what's happening.
The value proposition is clear.
The decision becomes informed instead of emotional.
The alternative is a pattern that quietly shifts from helping users to influencing behaviour.
It creates uncertainty where none existed.
It disguises a sales message as a notification.
And it repeats the same unresolved question over and over because the free user never gets closure.
This is why patterns like these are often discussed alongside Dark Patterns.
More specifically, they resemble Misdirection and Disguised Ads, where attention is intentionally directed towards an emotional trigger rather than a transparent value exchange.
From a product perspective, the pattern often works.
People click.
Some upgrade.
Conversion increases.
But there's another metric that's much harder to measure.
Trust.
Over time, users stop treating notifications as information.
They start treating them as marketing.
When every notification feels like bait, even genuinely useful ones lose their impact.
The product wins today's conversion.
But slowly loses tomorrow's attention.
As UX designers, we're not just designing interactions.
We're designing relationships.
Every notification teaches users what to expect from the product.
Will it respect their attention?
Or will it use their attention?
That's a design decision.
And it compounds over time.
The next time you design a notification, ask one simple question.
If I removed the paywall, would this notification still make sense as a piece of information?
If the answer is yes, you're probably informing the user.
If the answer is no, you may be optimising for curiosity rather than clarity.
And in the long run, products that earn trust almost always outperform products that manufacture anxiety.
