You Can’t Fake Design Taste

Let’s talk honestly

These days everyone talks about design taste
Especially now when AI can make something that looks decent in seconds

So the real question is not can you design
It is can you tell what is actually good

That is where the real difference is

I remember my early days

I used to look at my work and feel confused

Sometimes I knew something was off but I could not explain it
Sometimes I thought it looked fine but deep down I was not sure

Most designers go through this

It usually looks like this

You either know what looks good but cannot create it
Or you are not even sure what looks good yet

Both feel frustrating

The difference shows in how you work

When your taste is not strong your mind keeps jumping

Maybe change the color
Maybe try another font
Maybe fix spacing
Maybe add a grid

It feels like progress but it is mostly guessing

Now look at someone experienced

They do not try everything
They try a few things and they work

That is not luck
That is built instinct

So how do you build that

Not by just looking at more designs

But by slowing down and thinking

What helped me the most was simple

I started picking designs I liked

Then I asked myself one question

Why does this look good

At first my answers were very basic

Nice colors
Clean layout

But I kept going deeper

I would ask why again and again

I like this layout
Why

It feels balanced
Why

Spacing gives everything room
Why

It makes content easier to read

Now I was not just looking
I was understanding

After some time patterns started to appear

You notice what works in different situations
You start to see small details that matter

You stop copying
You start understanding

But there is one more step

You have to test your thinking

If you believe something works because of one thing then change it

Change the font
Change the spacing
Change the layout

Then see what happens

Sometimes it will fail
That is how you learn

Most people skip this

They scroll
They save
They move on

But they do not think

And without thinking taste does not grow

If I say it simply

Taste is not talent

It is built by noticing
by questioning
and by trying

again and again

And one day something changes

You stop guessing

You just know what feels right.
